Dear colleague :

I’m offering one postdoc position on ultra-precise chemical
abundances of metal-poor stars at the Universidade de Sao Paulo.
I’d appreciate if you forward this message to potential candidates.

Thanks,
Jorge.

Postdoctoral Fellowship on Ultra-precise Analysis of Metal-poor Stars

Applications are invited for one position as postdoctoral fellow at the
Astronomy Department of the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil, to
work with Dr. Jorge Melendez on ultra-precise chemical abundance analyses
of metal-poor stars, to make significant progress on a number of key open
problems such as Big Bang nucleosynthesis, stellar nucleosynthesis, the
rise of AGB stars in the early Galaxy, and in general on Galactic chemical
evolution. The successful candidate will be supported for a formal
application to FAPESP, the local funding agency. Based on experience
from previous funding applications, the selected candidate will have
very high chances of obtaining the FAPESP fellowship. USP is ranked as
the best University in South America and its Astronomy Department has
32 permanent staff, about 20 postdoctoral researchers and more than
50 MSc and PhD students. Brazil has access to Gemini, ESO, CFHT and SOAR,
and also to exchange programs with Keck, Subaru and CTIO.

The candidate is expected to work on analyzing spectra of excellent quality
(R = 50,000 - 100,0000, S/N>> 100) of dwarf, turn-off and subgiant
metal-poor stars. A superb dataset of Keck and VLT spectra is already
available for isotopic and elemental abundance studies. There are
opportunities for collaborations with astronomers from Germany, USA and
Australia. The fellow will be encouraged to pursue an independent
research program for part of his/her time.

The position is for two years with the possibility of extension for a third
year contingent on performance. The starting date is negotiable (between
09/2011-04/2012). Monthly salary (tax free) is R$5333,40 (about 3370 US$),
quite good for the living costs in Sao Paulo. A postdoc research/travel
budget of R$9600 per year will be available. In addition, the fellow will
have funds for a desktop (mac or linux), and probably also to additional
funds for observing in ESO and other facilities (Keck, Subaru, Magellan).
Airfare+ R$5333 (for relocation) will be paid for fellows from abroad.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD granted between March 2006 and
March 2012. They should send a cover letter, their curriculum vitae
(including a publication list) and an outline of their independent research
programs (indicating the fraction of time that they would like to spend for
their own research), by May 10, 2011. Applications should be sent by e-mail
to Dr. Jorge Melendez (jorge@astro.iag.usp.br). The candidates should also
arrange for two reference letters (electronic submission as pdf preferred)
to arrive by the same date. A decision on the pre-selection is expected by
mid-late May, and a final decision is expected 3 months after an application
is submitted to the funding agency FAPESP.
