- To refine the GAIA case for extrasolar planets (differentiate among different
planetary formation models; planetary frequency with age; systems which can support life)
- To evaluate the impact of photometric and astrometric noise intrinsic to the sources
- To provide corresponding inputs to accuracy requirements and payload design
- To provide inputs to the simulation task
- To define optimal methods for the detection of candidate systems
- To evaluate the combination of GAIA photometry, spectroscopy, and preliminary parallax
data to optimize the candidate list
- To assess the need for detectability requirements at the level of core processing
- To establish methods for orbital fiting (including strategies for finding initial
values of orbital parameters)
- To perform extensive simulations of detection and orbit determination (including
double-blind tests)
- To develop a reduction model for the parallel processing (algorithms, inputs, outputs)
- To establish needs and capabilities for ground-based follow-up observations
