Postdoctoral position in galactic astronomy at Paris-Meudon Observatory
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the Observatoire de Paris-Meudon (GEPI) to work on simulations of the Milky Way in collaboration with P. Di Matteo (GEPI), and F. Combes (LERMA) and other members of our team in GEPI, M. Haywood, A. Gomez, D. Katz, C. Babusiaux, F. Royer and F. Arenou for the comparisons with observations.
The position is offered as part of the GALHIS project funded by the Agence Nationale pour la Recherche, and successful applicant will also work in strong link with the two other research groups in the project (at UTINAM, Besançon, led by A. Robin and at the Observatoire de la Cote d’Azur, OCA, led by V. Hill).
The focus of this work is to investigate the formation scenarios of the Milky Way’s components, in particular of the bulge, thin and thick disk, by mean of N-body/SPH simulations and comparison with observational data acquired in the collaboration.
The candidate researcher at this position should have a PhD in astrophysics and a good knowledge of galactic astronomy. He/she should be familiar with the computing techniques, but also with the different astrophysical domains necessary to handle the simulations, namely stellar populations of the Milky Way and stellar dynamics. Additional knowledge in chemistry and the distribution and kinematics of the gas is most welcome.
The appointment is expected to start at the end of 2011, or early in 2012, for one year and a half.
Applicants should submit :
- CV ;
- list of publications ;
- a description of their past and present research accomplishments
- 2-3 letters of reference.
Please send applications and/or further inquiries about the position to M. Haywood (misha.haywood@obspm.fr) or P. Di Matteo (paola.dimatteo@obspm.fr)
Full consideration will be given to applications received by October 15 2011.
