Background information about Gaia
Gaia is a European Space Agency (ESA) astrometric (but also photometric and spectroscopic) space mission, and a successor of the ESA Hipparcos mission. It was included within the ESA Horizon 2000 Plus long-term scientific programme in 2000 and is expected for launch mid 2013.
